What is a BIOS Chip?

A BIOS chip (Basic Input/Output System) is a small memory chip on your motherboard that contains the first software executed when your computer starts. It initializes all hardware components and hands control to the operating system.

What Does a BIOS Actually Do?

During Startup (POST - Power-On Self-Test):

  • Checks if all hardware is properly connected
  • Tests RAM memory
  • Detects storage devices (SSD, HDD, NVMe)
  • Initializes the graphics card
  • Checks keyboard and mouse

Hardware Initialization:

  • Sets clock speeds for processor and memory
  • Configures USB ports and onboard devices
  • Manages fan speeds and temperature monitoring
  • Activates expansion cards (PCIe, M.2)

System Configuration:

  • Provides access to settings (BIOS setup)
  • Manages boot order
  • Sets date and time
  • Configures power management (sleep, hibernate)

Security:

  • BIOS password protection
  • Secure Boot (UEFI)
  • TPM module management
  • Hardware virtualization (VT-x, AMD-V)

Boot Process:

  • Loads the bootloader from the boot device
  • Hands control to the operating system (Windows, Linux)

Most modern motherboards use UEFI, but often still offer Legacy BIOS compatibility for older hardware.

Why Would You Flash a BIOS Chip?

Do it when:

  • New CPU not recognized after purchase
  • Stability issues or crashes
  • New functionality (e.g. Resizable BAR, XMP/EXPO)
  • Security patches
  • Compatibility with newer hardware

Do NOT do it if:

  • Your system is running stable
  • You don't have a concrete reason
  • You're not sure if the update is compatible with your motherboard

Risks of BIOS Flashing

  • Bad flash: Interruption during the process can make your motherboard unusable
  • Wrong version: Can lead to instability or boot failure
  • Power failure: Always use a UPS or laptop with full battery
  • Defective chip: Can physically break during the process

Dual BIOS Chips

Some motherboards (e.g. Gigabyte, ASUS) have a dual BIOS:

  • Primary chip: Normal use
  • Backup chip: Recovery in case of bad flash

If the primary chip fails, you can often switch to the backup with a switch or jumper and restore the primary.

Soldered BIOS Chips

Nowadays most BIOS chips are soldered onto the motherboard:

  • Not easy to remove or replace
  • External programming equipment required
  • Specialist work – risk of damage
  • Leave this to professionals!

How to Update a BIOS Chip?

Method 1: Via BIOS itself (recommended)

  1. Download the correct firmware from the manufacturer
  2. Extract the file to a USB stick (FAT32)
  3. Boot up and enter BIOS
  4. Look for "EZ Flash", "Q-Flash" or "M-Flash"
  5. Select the file and start the update
  6. Wait until the process is complete – DO NOT turn off!

Method 2: Via software (Windows)

  1. Download the utility from the manufacturer
  2. Run as administrator
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions
  4. Computer restarts automatically

Method 3: External programming (in case of bad flash)

  • Chip must be physically read with specialist equipment
  • Have this done by: www.flashbios.org – specialist in BIOS recovery and programming

  • Always check your current BIOS version before updating
  • Read the manufacturer's release notes
  • Never use a BIOS update from a different motherboard
